Millie, here. I posted 2 years ago. Tonight (6/18/2011) just back from a John Morgan performance on Cape Cod at Jake Rooney's on Rt 28. in Harwichport. Nostalgia Night. Apparently John played same building 45 yrs ago when it was the Chuck Wagon.. Great show with lots of Farquahr music, lots of memories of the P-Town Jug Band and the Fabulous Farquahr. John will play in Hyannis every Friday nite at the Anglers club. Check his web site (not kept current) for his cell phone and he will tell you where he is scheduled to play. How sad to see all these great local musicians now gone or no longer performing. What great memories their fans have!!

Since I posted in June about the Fabulous Farquahr, I've received a number of comments and emails, many asking for more information about the group. So far, I have come up with very little. Does anyone know of (or could write) a comprehensive history of this beloved band? I received this touching note in the comments today from Cape Cod Girl and thought I would post it:
I have a tape of my Dad and I playing the guitar and singing "My eggs don't taste the same without you." I was 3 at the time...and it's one of my most precious treasures. The song meant so much to me that for my wedding, I tracked down a record and had it played for my dad and I to dance to...it was a surprise for him and we laughed and cried the whole time. I still have the record - hanging on my wall.
Remember a 60/70's Cape Cod band called the Fabulous Farquahr, whose members were known as Barnswallow, Hummingbird, Condor and Flamingo Farquahr? Saw them many times both at the Crystal Palace on the Cape and at Dock & Dine in Saybrook. When Jim Kane mentioned them to me, I tried to find some info and, unfortunately, came up with the following from the Shoreline Antique Auto Connection website posting:
In some sad news, we received a broadcast notice dated 10/23/2004 from our friend and noted local musician Fred Vigorito, about the passing of another local person well known in both music and antique auto circles, Mr. Frank McGowan. Quoting from Fred's e-mail: "...Sadly, we report that Frank McGowan of the Fabulous Farquahr died on Thursday, Oct 21 at the age of 65. The GJB's relationship with Frank and the Fabulous Farquahr goes back to the 1960's and the WTIC Hootenanny Road Show. Over the years we did some of our most exciting shows with the Farquahr. The first big show was at Joel Schiavone's Palace Theatre in New Haven, and we sold all 2000 seats! It was truly a memorable evening. The Farquahr also appeared regularly at the Dock and Dine in Saybrook, at Christies and Pufferbellies on Cape Cod, and any place in CT that could handle a sellout crowd. I've always described them as the most entertaining group I had ever listened to. They were exciting, funny, energetic, and always in tune with their audience. Frank was their emcee, and lead vocalist on many of their tunes. Whenever he saw me in the audience, he'd have me stand as he described the "fabulous Galvanized Jazz Band!" We loved Frank, and the Fabulous Farquahr, and we're going to miss them..." I looked around further and eventually found Mr. McGowan's obituary published at the Clancy Funeral Home web site. Here is the text:
"Frank McGowan, June 08, 1939 - October 21, 2004...Birthplace: New Haven CT...Resided In: Branford CT...Visitation: October 24, 2004; Service: October 25, 2004; Cemetery: St. Agnes Cemetery...In Branford October 21, 2004, Francis T. "Frank" McGowan, lifelong resident of Branford...Survived by his fiancée, Robin Swanson, and her four sons, of Branford, brothers, Jack (Sue) McGowan and Bobby (Caren) McGowan of Branford; sister Peggy (Jim) Piergrossi of Guilford; sister-in-law Marcia McGowan of Branford. I never saw the band live, but at some oint the song "My Eggs Don't Taste the Same Without You" got played often in one of the many- residenst post-hippie apartments in Providence where I resided. To this day I find myself singing it often. Did they also do "Back In Nagasaki..." or "My canary Has Circles Under His Eyes" or was that somebody else?

What a great group the Farquahr were, I saw them many times at the Crystal Palace on Cape Cod, They put on a tremendous happy hour show with skits and great songs of comedy & mirth. I would love to be able to see them again....God bless Dennis & Frank..
My uncle,now deceased, was good friends with 2 of the Farquahr. I grew up listening to them and vividly remember one of them playing piano and singing during a party at my Aunts. I saw them live 3 times, the last being at an irish Feis in about 88 or 89. I still have two of their albums on vinyl and 2 on cassette. My favorite is a song called "Stupid Ruth".

The Fabulous Farquahr
I had the pleasure last summer of meeting Bob McGowan (the band member that "anonymous", above, forgot). Nicest guy I've met in a long time. He took the time (probably close to an hour) out of his busy day to show my wife and I some of the Farquahr memorabilia he had at his shop.
My parents, who both grew up in CT, spent a lot of time at Mount Snow in the late sixties, and were evidently friendly with the Farquahr. Seems that they had tons of friends!
My dad had a habit of whistling, and more often than not I'd hear him whistling My Eggs Don't Taste The Same Without You or Teddy Bear Days.
I have a few 45s that I found on Ebay. If you're lucky, you might be able to find their CD, "From the Top", which includes most of the old favorites and some newer music. I only wish I'd been old enough to have seen them play live!

Cloud Nine Motel was only one of many comedic songs sung by the Farquahr (most written by Doug Lapham "Barnswallow") This song was featured on a Dr. Demento show that may or may not be archived somewhere on the net. I almost know the lyrics by heart. here goes with apologies to Doug.
I took my wife and kids on vacation, to a place where we'd never been, there was a mixup in the reservations, so for us there was no room at the Inn. Now this was at the height of the season when a room was really hard to find, we drove around and long about evening we found a motel thet called cloud nine. Now the wife and kids went out to find our room, while I unloaded the car, soon the kids came running back excited and said hey dad this is the best place by far! chorus:

I know they had a great following..

My wife, a cousin (Purcell) to the McGowan boys, spent some of her early life in Branford and was especially close to Dennis who was her age. We had the privilege of attending a Farquahr concert at a pub in Essex back in '69. Dennis passed away a few years ago of cancer. One brother, Bobby, is still going strong, and we've visited with him a time or two in the past couple of years, most recently at a Purcell Family reunion in Branford this summer. Bobby is a great guy, and when we visited he was in the process of closing up the antique car restoration activities he and his brothers shared over the years. Standing in his "office" and trying to take in all the memorabilia which covered all possible surfaces in that room was pretty overwhelming and nostalgic. Somebody really should put a little friendly pressure on

Frank, Bobby, and Dennis McGowan were good friends (Bobby still is). I got to know them in the old car hobby. We were all partial to Packards from the mid Twenties to the mid Thirties. I also knew Jim Ricker (Buzzard) who was a regular member of the Farquahr. There was another McGowan brother, Jack, who would go with Frank, Bobby and Dennis to the huge old car flea market in Hershey, Pennsylvania, every October. Jack was not otherwise involved in the old cars and he wasn't involved in the band, either. I saw the Fabulous Farquahr perform once and I wish I had seen them more. They were very good and their repertoire was a wonderful mix of good old fashioned, well done folk music and hilarious original material, like "Motel Cloud Nine" which is one of my favorites. Frank gave me a CD of their "From The Top" album and my biggest regret is that I didn't get them to sign it. I think we all often assume our friends will be around forever. Now only Bobby is left. The last time I talked to Bobby he said just the day before he watched the buildings that housed their old car business bulldozed. It's the end of an era.
I met Doug and the McGowans back in the early 60's. They were simply known as, "Dougie and the McGowan's" (I think) and would frequently play at the Hofbraus House in New Haven. I worked with Dougie during the day at Dale System - an investigative shopping service in New Haven. We would drive all over the state and Dougie would be in the back seat practicing his songs on his guitar. He was truly talented - he wrote "You Don't Know What You've Got (Until You Lose It)" which was sung by Ral Donner around 1961 and made the top 10. I have many wonderful memories of Dougie, Bobby, Frank and Dennis - The Fabulous Farguahr. Sadly Dennis and Frank are gone and not too long ago Jack, the older brother, passed away. May they all be resting in peace.
I saw the Farquahrs many times at Charlie Bates Saloon on 1st Ave in NYC. The MacGowan Brothers. Great guys. I was a college student at CCNY, and we liked them so much we hired them to put on a show at CCNY-Downtown (now Baruch College) in our auditorium. We have some great photos of them in our 1968 yearbook. The Farquahrs went on to be become the official troubadors to the Humbert Humphrey presidential campaign of 1968.
Tonight my wife and I were driving home and I said "Remember the Fabulous Farquar?. We lived in Clinton, Ct for 7 years in the late 60's and had seen them at the Dock and Dine, together with her folks. We have lived in Tiverton,RI for 30 years, so it must have been in 1973 or 1974. I can still remember a stirring rendition of "The Eleanor Roosevelt Rag" It had style, a great melody, and sparkling lyrics. The music still haunts my mind. It was a wonderful evening. They were in the truest sense and with much honor - ENTERTAINERS! .I am sorry to hear of Frank McGowans passing. I can still see him smiling and singing on the stage. It is nice to find some others who share a memory from so long ago.

I always thought "My Island" was an incredibly beautiful song.
I grew up in P-town, MA & listening to the Jug Band - outside the Surf Club until I was old enuf to go in. They did a lot of Farquahr tunes & referred to them all the time. I know a couple of the more rowdy tunes - "My eggs", "Carol, you're the bottom of the barrel" - & remember a little of some others - "Dear John Deere", "My Island", "Eleanor Roosevelt Rag". This is the most informative site I've found on them, & I've looked all over the net, also trying to find records to buy. Found a few sources for 45's but only ebay for albums. Did get the '68 LP "Fabulous Farquahr" but just missed one from from '70, "Farquahr". Were there any more?
i grew up with all the boys and played high school sports with all of them ..bobby was the hardest runner in football i ever had to tackle ...dennis was the fastest on a basketball court and i threw many a fastbreak to him
Looks like a fan that remembers those "live" performances and that's trying to keep the memories alive, did some recent tribute cover songs. Search "fabulous farquahr" on YouTube.com and it should bring four songs up: "My Eggs Don't Taste the Same Without You," "Stick with the Dogs," "Sweet Smell of Success" and "El Groino the Gay Ranchero." Hope this helps and brings some smiles to all you Farquahr-heads out there.
We saw the Farquahr live several times with my parents and their friends, usually when they came to CT in the late 80's and early 90's. Even in our late teens/early 20's they were a lot of fun.
I've often wondered what happened to them as they sort of fell off the radar. Sad to see that a couple of the Mcgowan's had passed away. I wish I had some CD's. I've got a cassette that's nearly been worn out.
Frank and the guys were part of a hell of an era.I owned a joint on the Cape called On The Rocks.My wish was always to have The Farquar and John Morgan Play there.I always regreted not making it happened.They were one of the greatest saloon acts ever and great guys to boot !!
I worked with Bobby at Western Electric when he had a "real job".
Later I had the fortune to be a bartender at the Rocking Horse saloon in Hartford Ct. where the boys played on a regular basis. Those were such great days, running up to Fat City when they played ski country or the Land Ho on the cape. So many parties, so many great times, too many to coun t. By far the best saloon band ever.
I miss them.

I was sorry to hear of Dennis McGowan's passing. I remember when he sang with The Avalons in Branford Ct. Great voice. Ed Hayden sang lead on "Coming Home", Pick Hit of the week on WNHC. Doug Lapham was a good friend and a great writer,attested by the Ral Donner songs. What ever happened to Mike Packavitch, Charlie Witkowski, and Jonesy? Is Van McKlee still in ShortBeach? Wow, I have tears in my eyes from reading all these Fabulous Farquahr tributes. I am now 65, first experiences the FF in my early 20's at the Rockinghorse in Hartford CT. Awesome, unforgettable. When I married, my husband was more fanatic than me, so we kept track of where the band would be playing and attended dozens of shows over the years. Pufferbellies & Christine's (I think that was the name on RT 28) both on the Cape. (Not being skiers, we missed out on a lot.) For many years they were booked for a St Patrick's Day event by the West Hartford CT firemen. We got dozens of friends to join us (50 of us for one show!) year after year. We still reminisce about those marvelous evenings singing along with the guys. My 2 daughters grew up singing along to the songs on Cassette as we drove back and forth to the Cape, and it was BIG when they finally were old enough to attend a performance. I must admit that I never saw them at our local watering hole here on the Cape (the Land Ho) but I think that was before we started to come here around 1970. I sent an inquiry to Branford a few years back and got a sweet reply telling me of Frank's death and the end of the band. There will never be another bunch of guys who took the stage night after night with such a fierce desire to ENTERTAIN everyone present to the very best of their abilities. And that they did, every time.
I saw the Farquhar at Fat City in Wilmington, VT many times and John Morgan, Bill Coley and Sweet Pie as well. Good times back then.
hey aloft 52 ive heard many stories of fat city from my dad Rick Redin and grandparents in the past. after high school i lived there for a while. its still a wild place. I got to cut my teeth to the sounds of farquahr and love them to this day.
I loved these guys. They were such great fun to listen to. Saw them many times around the CT shoreline. I used to have one of their tapes but in my many moves it got lost. I will now have to check out ITunes to see if it's available.
Eleanor Roosevelt Rag can be seen on YouTube by The Great Rubber Band, who recorded a show in 1980 and posted it on YouTube. The do a few Farquahr tunes and are a similar group.
Farquahr the 1970 Album is available on Itunes.
Hopefully more will keep coming forward.

The Farquhar were the best. My daughter at age 3 was singing the Pizza Boy song at school... for all who don't know, the chorus goes something like this..."Pizza, pizza, pizza, pizza, pizza boy is here. I got your red hot pizza, I hope you got the beer." Needless to say, I got a call from her nursery school teacher. skip ahead 19 years- she did graduate from college so was apparently not permantly damaged.
